 I first heard of Cosmic Consciousness from Richard Maurice Bucke, MD in his book Cosmic Consciousness. In it he outlines the evolutionary struggle on our planet which has produced and is still producing self-consciousness and then describes the appearance of a new species that possesses cosmic consciousness, a consciousness that expands to become one with all. Bucke theorizes that, with increasing frequency, persons like Buddha, Christ, Mohammed, Walt Whitman and others are making their appearance on our planet and by their teaching are helping to transform life on this planet. This evolutionary process continues up until today. Bucke studied the lives of these persons and found common characteristics such as:

1. intuitive understanding
2. elevated moral stature
3. loss of sense of sin
4. intellectual illumination
5. sense of immortality
6. no fear of death
7. definite moment or period of transformation

I believe the appearance of Cosmic Consciousness in the course of evolution is analogous the appearance of bipedalism (ability to walk on two legs). With bipedalism began a major branching away from simple-consciousness animals; dogs and birds, for example, have simple consciousness. This process advanced toward the production of various Homo species and eventually culminated in the development and domination of the self-conscious Homo Sapiens Sapiens species. Self-consciousness enables us to store and manipulate mountains of sense knowledge in powerful little mental bundles called words. This dramatically increases our awareness. Cosmic consciousness is a major branching away from self-consciousness. It enables us to wield mountains of words (ideas) in powerful, life-giving revelations (intuitions) we call truth.

Just as bipedalism was accompanied with bountiful radiation (branching out of various species to explore newly opened environmental space), so should we expect radiation with the appearance of cosmic consciousness. Our responsibility is to discern the path that leads forward that is consonant with the laws of Nature. There will likely be inter-species struggles which will culminate in one species which will eventually "occupy and possess the earth.". Since I know of no other who has yet named this new cosmic conscious species that will "occupy and possess the earth", I propose the name Communist and associate with it, the following characteristics:

Just as scientists go through various models of what they look for, so will nature produce various ‘models’ (species) or degrees of perfection of cosmic conscious persons.

The key to understanding all these things is to keep a vision of the whole process in mind. We all were made to be one with god. Cosmic consciousness enables us to immediately experience oneness with God who is the Universe. Being one with God, we become one with the Universe, the Cosmos. We attain Cosmic Consciousness by going through a cycle of development. This cycle has steps or stages we must pass through as well as laws of development. The stages are

The shinning path toward Communism leads to progress and perfection. All that is reactionary is to be avoided. We should avoid these things:

In the beginning we were one with God but lacked the development necessary to take our place with the rest of the universe. Self-consciousness is negation of our pristine union with God. (see Laws above). This negation will itself be negated when we return to union with God as cosmic conscious beings at the end of the cycle. During the interim period, self-conscious individualism (thinking) prevails. The purpose of this period is perfection—to understand the laws of nature and use them to bring health and prosperity to all on the planet. At each step along the way there are the opposites (see laws above) which provide the dynamics (energy) for development. Throughout the whole process we must keep our minds open to transformation (revolution)—the change from a quantity to quality (see laws above). The change at each stage and the change to cosmic consciousness requires an openness, a childlike openness, that ensures overall progress. We must profoundly change our way of thinking about religion and politics. We must become profoundly involved in the welfare of our youth—we are the ones who will give birth to and cultivate the species of the future. We must discern and direct all our energies toward the shinning path that leads toward progress. Our target in this cycle is perfection, progress. Supernaturalism or idealism are basically reactionary ideas and are not helpful. Effective struggle demands we keep our goal (union with God in cosmic consciousness) in mind. Our goal is a communist society, a one-world family life where each contributes according to their abilities and each receives what they need. Such a society requires the abundance of an advanced culture. It is a society where money no longer has any role whatsoever. It is a society of the new species which "is in the act of being born from us." It is a society, which Isaiah spoke of saying:
